Wahlin Bruises Breezy, Whips Willmar, Snags Star of the Week

MASON CITY, Iowa – Lucas Wahlin and Cam Fagerlee have long been in a race for the North Iowa Bulls’ goal-scoring lead, with both men heading into Saturday’s game tied at the top.

The lead now belongs to Wahlin, and so does this week’s Bauer Hockey NA3HL West Division Star of the Week award. Wahlin was named the division’s Star of the Week on Wednesday afternoon, the second time this season that the team has earned back-to-back Star of the Week awards. Wahlin is the fifth different Bulls player to earn the award this season.

The Woodbury, Minnesota native scored four goals over the weekend, including a hat trick in Saturday’s 12-2 win over the Willmar WarHawks. Wahlin also added an assist to go with his goal Friday in an 11-1 win at Breezy Point, and he tallied two assists in Saturday’s game. He is now the leading goal scorer on the team with 16 tallies, with Fagerlee slipping into second place with 14 goals.

“Lucas is one of our best players right now and a production leader for our group,” said Bulls head coach Todd Sanden.

Wahlin’s production over the last three weeks has been impressive, with seven goals and seven assists over a five-game point streak. It’s now officially a streak for the Bulls, with Austin McNeil earning a Star of the Week award last week for a five-goal weekend against Rochester and Willmar. Sota Isogai, Cam Fagerlee and Mason Enright have also been named the division’s Star of the Week during the course of this season.

North Iowa returns home this weekend for the team’s last jersey auction in the “Barn.” The team will wear special jerseys in both Friday and Saturday’s games against the Granite City Lumberjacks, with a jersey auction following Saturday night’s game to benefit the American Cancer Society. Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m., with live streaming coverage on HockeyTV and free audio streaming on Mixlr.
