CLEAR LAKE, Iowa – The North Iowa Bulls have much to be proud of in their seven years on the junior hockey scene: three NA3HL championships, and three national titles. 300-plus wins. Dozens upon dozens of former players moving on to play the sport in college, with a handful also reaching the pros.

The Bulls, however, are every bit as proud to begin their eighth year of service in the North Iowa community. The team helps to raise or donate about $40,000 annually, holding multiple specialty jersey auctions each year and donating Bulls merchandise and tickets to charity auctions across the region. Among the organizations to benefit from the Bulls’ jersey auctions in recent years are the Humane Society of North Iowa, My Happy Place, the North Iowa Youth Center, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The team’s six returning players, and this year’s newcomers, made their first appearance of the season at Thursdays on Main in Clear Lake this past week. That will be the first of many appearances for this season’s group, which has run the gamut over the past seven years.

Each year, Bulls players and staff donate hundreds of volunteer hours, including as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army, dog-walkers for the Humane Society of North Iowa, and as part of the Mason City Public Schools’ Walking School Bus. Team sponsors such as the YMCA and HyVee have also benefitted from the volunteer hours put in by players and staff in the organization.

Fans have also gotten involved on an annual basis, taking part in the team’s annual “Give Blood, Play Hockey” blood drive to benefit the Red Cross and LifeServe Blood Center, and an annual holiday teddy-bear toss to benefit the Salvation Army.
