MASON CITY, Iowa – With the Bulls’ “Decade of Dominance” weekend coming up, North Iowa news has been coming fast and furious this week. The pace of the Bulls’ accomplishments this week has closely mirrored the pace of Cal Nauss’s scoring, as his fast and furious work on the blue line has earned him the league’s Bauer Hockey Defenseman of the Month award.
North Iowa has brought home its share of the league hardware already this season, with three straight West Division Star of the Week awards from Garrett Freeman, Brayden Uttech and Sota Isogai. However, it’s the first time a North Iowa player has earned a monthly honor since defenseman Shane Bernhardson and goaltender Colin Cain both earned monthly awards from the NA3HL for their play in December of 2017.
Nauss has been nothing if not dependable for the Bulls in the early goings, posting no worse than an even plus/minus rating in every one of his nine appearances. On the way to a +11 rating in the first month of the season, the Wayzata, Minnesota native has bagged three goals and seven assists, coming into November with three multi-point games and just one point shy of the North Iowa lead.
It’s an outstanding start to his second season with the Bulls, after posting 28 points as a rookie last season. His third-period goal last Saturday against the Willmar WarHawks put him at three goals for the season, already matching his total from all of last season.
The Bulls wrap up a brief homestand this weekend with home games against Willmar on Friday and the Alexandria Blizzard on Saturday. As part of North Iowa’s “Decade Of Dominance” weekend, the Bulls will celebrate the team’s 10th Anniversary season with special jerseys, which will be auctioned off after Saturday’s game. Former North Iowa standouts will also appear at this weekend’s games, and the team will also raffle a jersey from its inaugural season in 2011-12.
