Marenis’ hat trick boosts North Iowa over Granite City, 9-5

A hat trick by Rihards Marenis was the highlight in Bulls\’ 9-5 win against the Granite City Lumberjacks.

Marenis\’ first goal came 10:23 into the first period. He then added goals at 6:49 into the second and at 13:52 into the second.

The win by the North Iowa Bulls clinched the best of three series at 2-1.

North Iowa\’s offense rang up 38 shots on Granite City\’s net.

North Iowa additionally got points from Sam Naegele, who also registered one goal and one assist, Matt Kroska, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Tim Santopoalo, who also racked up one goal and two assists, and Wesley Iverson, who also had two goals and one assist. North Iowa also got a goal from Brandon Anderson as well. In addition, North Iowa received assists from Matthew Kaitchuck, Tyler Richison, and Conor Jonasson, who contributed one each and Zach Jones and Cameron Brown, who each chipped in two.

The Bulls were unable to stop the Lumberjacks from sending pucks towards the net, and Granite City eventually piled up 41 shots on goal.

The Lumberjacks were helped by David Horsmann, who registered one goal. Horsmann scored on the power play 13:42 into the second period to make the score 5-3 North Iowa. Granite City had gotten the advantage when North Iowa\’s Joe Kleven was sent off for interference. Aidan Verbeke picked up the assist. Granite City also had goals scored by Drew Otto, who had two and Blake Phenow and Travis Kothenbeutel, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Granite City were Zach Voss, who had two and Brady Bernhardson, Tobias Gabrielsen, and Nick Haase, who contributed one each.

The Bulls\’ Chris Amsden stopped 36 shots out of the 41 that he faced. North Iowa incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Scott Murray rejected 29 shots on goal for the Lumberjacks. Granite City incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
