Dec 10, 2017

GAME BOXSCORE

ROCHESTER, Mich. – North Iowa set a new home record Friday night with 17 goals on home ice in “The Barn.” The Bulls’ offense hit another new high on Saturday in Rochester, credited with a national Tier III-record 101 shots on a 13-0 rout of the Ice Hawks. North Iowa has won eight games in a row heading into the annual NA3HL Showcase, starting next weekend in Blaine, Minnesota.

The Bulls were able to get on the board on Dayton Honkanen‘s (New Brighton, Minn./North Iowa Bulls) goal just 3:35 into the game against Luke Murphy. Back-to-back goals from John Studioso (Edmonds, Wash./Everett Jr. Silvertips) and Josh Arnold (Roseville, Minn./North Iowa Bulls) scored back-to-back goals just 54 seconds apart to push the lead to 3-0 just 6:22 in. Arnold got the first-intermission lead to four goals by putting another one away at the 11:16 mark.

Peter Verstegen (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh H.S.) tapped in a rebound from Jarod Blackowiak (Eden Prairie, Minn./Austin Bruins) at 4:35 of the second, pushing the lead to 5-0. A Luke Ranfranz tripping penalty just past the five-minute mark set up a Bulls power play, and Tyler Bump (Prior Lake, Minn./North Iowa Bulls) tallied one late in the 5-on-4 to get the special teams on the board.

Connor Clemons‘s (Savage, Minn./Minnesota Magicians) breakaway marker at 9:49 of the second period made it a 7-0 game, and Jett Larson (Rancho Mirage, Calif./Shattuck-St. Mary’s U18) notched his second career goal just past the 14-minute mark for an eight-goal lead.

By the end of the second period, the lead was at double-figures, with Verstegen tipping one in on the doorstep with 4:19 remaining and a goal from Alex Timm (/Northwest H.S.) with just 36 seconds showing on the second-period clock.

The gap between the intermission and the scoreboard was even smaller on the other side of the break, with Brendan Studioso (Mukilteo, Wash./North Iowa Bulls) notching another breakaway goal just 30 seconds into the third period for an 11-0 lead. Arnold finished off another four-goal night with shorthanded goals at 12:50 and 13:32 of the third, getting the final score to 13-0 for the night.

Drew Scites (Plymouth, Minn./North Iowa Bulls) faced just 17 shots from the Ice Hawks in picking up his third shutout with the Bulls. North Iowa is off until next Sunday, when the Bulls face the Lewiston/Auburn Nordiques from the Coastal Division in the NA3HL Showcase. The opening faceoff at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., with exclusive live streaming coverage on HockeyTV.
