Granite City outlasts North Iowa, 3-2

The Granite City Lumberjacks and the North Iowa Bulls were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Granite City made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Travis Kothenbeutel secured the win for the Lumberjacks with a goal in the third period.

The win gave Granite City a 1-0 lead in the best of one series.

In a losing effort, North Iowa was paced by Trey Gardner, who registered two goals. Gardner scored the first of his two goals at 15:32 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Gardner\’s next tally made the score 3-3 with 3:42 left in the third period. Kurt Halbach assisted on the tally.

The Lumberjacks were sparked by Kothenbeutel, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Kothenbeutel scored 15:35 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Granite City. David Kenney picked up the assist.

Granite City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Others who scored for Granite City included Jared Sprink and David Horsmann, who each put in one. More assists for Granite City came via Mitchell Gwost, Michael Orke, and Dallas Marvin, who each chipped in one.

The Bulls stifled the Lumberjacks\’ power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Dylan Zins also scored for North Iowa.

Jesse Garcia made 19 saves for Granite City on 21 shots. The Lumberjacks totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. North Iowa\’s Chris Amsden stopped 18 shots out of the 21 that he faced. The Bulls incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
