AU PAIR: Alexandria has kept pace with the Bulls this year, winning five of their 11 meetings with North Iowa, sometimes in dramatic fashion. Two Blizzard players have notched all five of the game-winning tallies in those meetings, with Colin Tushie scoring three of those. Tushie’s first junior goal on October 24 turned out to be the game-winner in a 4-2 victory, while his goal with 30.1 seconds to play on January 16 sealed a 3-2 victory and his game-winner with 2:15 to play on February 13 iced another 4-2 win. Sean Kenny, who scored the game-winner in overtime Friday night, also notched the eventual game-winner on a third-period penalty kill February 21 in a 4-3 win at North Iowa.
WILLMAR ON THE WAY TO THE FINALS: The winner of this series faces Willmar, who shocked the second-seeded Granite City Lumberjacks on the other side of the West Division bracket. The Lumberjacks took seven of their 10 regular-season meetings, but the WarHawks charged to an early lead in a 4-3 win on Thursday, and Isaiah Thomas put Willmar ahead for good with just 51 seconds left in regulation Saturday on the way to a 3-1 triumph. This season marks the WarHawks’ first playoff appearance since 2018, surging to a 22-win season after starting with losses in eight of their first 10 games, and their first-ever playoff series victory.
