ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen Wings head coach Scott Langer took his team from the last playoff spot in the North American Hockey League’s Central Division to the final weekend of the Robertson Cup tournament a year ago. He’s got the Wings on the rise again this year, sitting just percentage points behind the Austin Bruins for the top spot in the Central heading into the New Year’s Eve weekend.
He hopes moving forward, he’s found a player in North Iowa Bulls forward Cameron Fagerlee who can keep that rise going.
Fagerlee signed a tender with Langer’s Aberdeen squad on Wednesday, becoming the second Bull to tender with an NAHL team this season, following Brendan Studioso‘s signing with the Minnesota Wilderness early last month.
The St. Anthony, Minnesota native earned a call-up to the Amarillo Bulls three weeks ago, but did not see time on the ice for Rocky Russo’s club. He returned in plenty of time to notch four points at the NA3HL Showcase, including a three-assist performance in a 6-0 rout of South Division leader Texas on the Showcase’s final day.
For now, though, his NAHL appearances will come exclusively for Aberdeen, and he’ll come off the NAHL draft board this coming summer as well. That means the Wings will also have the first shot at putting him on their roster when the 2018-19 season begins.
The former Totino-Grace prep standout wasted no time getting comfortable in his first sweater at the junior level, scoring his first goal in his first game with the Bulls. His goal was just the second in a 9-2 win over Wisconsin on the opening night of North Iowa’s season. After that, the points kept coming…..for 18 games in a row, the third-longest point streak in North Iowa history.
Fagerlee is one of six North Iowa Bulls to earn a call-up from an NAHL team this season. Connor Clemons also began the season in the NAHL with the Minnesota Magicians before rejoining the Bulls in late October. In six-plus seasons, the club has seen more than two dozen players earn call-ups to the NAHL, either for a brief stop or on a more permanent basis.
