MASON CITY, Iowa – Ice has been back in the Mason City Multipurpose Arena since the end of June, and the North Iowa Bulls are excited to announce their first-ever Youth Development Camp, scheduled for August 3-7 in downtown Mason City. The camp will provide ice time, as well as time to develop off-ice skills, for players in the 8-and-under to 18-and-under age groups.
Players in the 8U, 10U and 12U age groups will hit the ice bright and early at 9 a.m., and wrap up at 12:45 p.m. 14U, 16U and 18U players will start their camp day at 1:15 p.m., and finish at 5 p.m. Two-and-a-half hours each day will be spent on the ice, making for more than 12 hours of ice time and five hours of off-ice development for each player over the course of the week.
A number of important skills will be taught during the week. Puck skills included in the camp include using change of pace and direction, increasing range of motion with the puck, using fakes and dekes to beat defenders and more. Situational skills like even- and out-numbered situations, offensive zone play and zone entry, and containing, pressuring and positioning on defense will also be taught.
Players will also learn the Perfect Skating platform developed by NHL skills coach Shawn Allard, who currently serves as the On-Ice Performance Consultant for the Colorado Avalanche. Many of the world’s top hockey players have improved their skating abilities through Allard’s program.
The camp will be directed by Phil Huynh, a professional skills coach assisting both the North Iowa Bulls and the North American Hockey League’s Amarillo Bulls. North Iowa head coach/general manager Todd Sanden will also be involved in conducting the camp as well as past and current North Iowa Bulls players.
The cost of the camp is $425 per player, and Mason City Youth Hockey players will receive a $25 discount on their registration. All participating players will receive two tickets to a future North Iowa Bulls home game.
