Birthday Boy Mordini Singing the Blues With Call-Up to Springfield

Dec 12, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – It’s a question that everyone gets to answer once a year: “What are you doing to celebrate your birthday?” North Iowa forward Steven Mordini‘s (Baraboo, Wis./Team Wisconsin) previous plans for Monday probably don’t look much like what he’s actually doing to celebrate his 19th birthday.

He’s spending the day traveling…to Illinois, specifically.

Mordini was called up Monday to join the Springfield Jr. Blues of the Tier II North American Hockey League, the Bulls’ second NAHL call-up in less than two weeks. The first-line defenseman has had more than a respectable half-season in a North Iowa sweater – he’ll leave the team with an active four-game point streak in progress, including three multi-point games in a row. His 28 points ranks eighth among NA3HL defensemen heading into the league’s showcase this weekend, and his +36 plus/minus rating is fourth among all 3HL rookies. He was also the team’s first two-time Bauer Hockey NA3HL Central Division Star of the Week this season, earning the awards on Sept. 13 and Nov. 2, and was chosen as the league’s Defenseman of the Month in October.

It’s the fourth NAHL call-up of the year for Todd Sanden’s team, and two of the previous three are currently in the Tier II ranks. Kohei Sato made his debut with the Northeast Generals two months ago, scoring a goal in his first game with the team. Josh Benson earned his call-up to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs two weeks ago, and made his debut on Saturday, taking a no-decision with 23 saves in a loss to the New Jersey Titans.

Springfield will be on the road this Friday and Saturday night, facing off against the Janesville Jets before heading on their Christmas break.

The Bulls wish Steven Mordini the very best in Springfield and the NAHL.
