May 13, 2015

The North Iowa Bulls are proud to announce that defenseman Kurt Halbach from Madison, Wisconsin has committed to ACHA D1 Iowa State University. Iowa State is a perennial nationally ranked ACHA D1 program. Halbach was the Bulls team leader in +/- at +38 this season and recorded 17 points on 2 goals and 15 assists in 38 regular season games. During the 2015 NA3HL West Division playoffs and the Silver Cup Tournament Kurt had one assist and was +3. Halbach also played in one game with the Austin Bruins during the 2014-15 campaign. "Kurt is one of those players that was on the cusp of being an NAHL player. He was tendered in the NAHL and played games in that league. Kurt's skating ability is what attracted us to him initially. He is very good in rush situations but also possesses the lateral skating ability that helped him excel defensively with the Bulls. He worked hard on his defending the D zone during his time with the Bulls. He plays with poise and understands that good decisions are what keep defensemen out of trouble situations. You will not see Kurt go barreling into the corner where his partner is, he is aware of his surroundings. Kurt was a solid performer at the USA Hockey National tournament and helped the Bulls capture the 2015 USA Hockey National Championship."
Iowa State Cyclones head hockey coach Jason Fairman had this to say about his new recruit, "Cyclone Hockey is thrilled about Kurt Halbach's commitment to Iowa State University! He fits the mold of players we look for at Iowa State in that he brings top academic work ethic mixed with a tremendous hockey skill set. On his official visit to ISU we were impressed with his maturity and professionalism. His experience with a such a successful junior program as the North Iowa Bulls will help him make an immediate impact on our team at Iowa State."
Halbach on his time with the Bulls, "I want to thank my parents for supporting me and my time in the NA3HL. It was a great place for me to develop as a player and mature as a person. Being put in pressure situations, whether it was playing for championships or playing in front of 1500 fans at the barn in North Iowa, I feel these opportunities have helped prepare me to be successful at Iowa State. I want to thank everyone involved with helping make this happen for me from my teammates, my billets in Mason City, to the coaching staff, and to the great fans of the North Iowa Bulls. My next goal is to help ISU win a national championship."
Kurt Halbach is the 8th player from this years team to make a college commitment. Combined with three players tendered in the NAHL North Iowa is proving to be one of the top development opportunities in the NA3HL.
The North Iowa Bulls wish Kurt much success at ISU and thank him for his contributions to the continued success of the North Iowa Bulls.
